Welcome to the nerdiest page on this entire lab site (and trust us, there is quite a competition for that title). The lab logo is inspired by two areas of research, but first, a quick tangent into a famous optimal illusion (trust us, it's relevant):
Have your answer? Many people see a rabbit, and many others see a duck. Both answers are correct! Sometimes a person's experience or context can lead them towards one answer or another.
The lab logo can also be viewed in two ways, and depending on your background and experiences you might be more inclined to see it one way or another. It will generally appear like a stylized brain to everyone, because that's exactly what it is. But beyond that...
The segments and small connecting lines could imply network and circuit theories of the brain, in which neural functions are not just localized to single nuclei or regions, but are produced by a distributed group or circuit of regions working together.
The hierarchical nature of the segments (few at the top, more at the bottom) and the connecting lines could be reminiscent of hierarchical structural models commonly seen as a result of exploratory factor analysis or structural equation modeling. It was specifically designed with the Hierarchical Taxonomy of Psychopathology in mind.
Our lab conducts research in both neuroscience and quantitative psychology. We are inherently cross-disciplinary, collaborate with colleagues who can have very different training backgrounds and areas of expertise, and aim to produce research that makes meaningful contributions to multiple fields. Our lab logo reflects these values and goals. And like the rabbit-duck, there is no true right answer. What you see is what you see!
If you made it this far, thank you for indulging in some of our nerdery!
